Fischer's Lovebirds are probably the most popular and easy to keep lovebird species next to the Peachfaced Lovebird. They do not however show the same agression as the Peachfaced and Masked Lovebird species. They are best bred in a colony setup, but they will breed in single pairs in smaller cages.Fischer's Lovebirds will breed all year round, but best breeding results are achieved in the cooler months. It is best to give your birds a rest from breeding during summer.I find that half of the chicks will not survive in hot conditions as the parents will not enter the nest box as often. The hot and humid conditions in well built nests are death traps for any Lovebird chicks in summer.Handrearing, although time consuming,is recommended during the hotter months to have a better survival rate, but ideally, the nest boxes should be removed and your birds should be given a well deserved rest from the previous breeding season.
There are many mutations in Fischer's Lovebirds around the world today and I feel that the number of new mutations will one day overtake the Peachfaced Lovebird.Alot of Fischer's mutations are a result of hybriding with the Black Masked Lovebird. When buying these birds, try and be selective. In the Green series mutations, look for birds that don't have a yellow bib or ring that goes around the back of the neck. In the blue series colours a white ring around the neck should be avoided.Any grey or black in the face should be avoided in any colour Fischer's Lovebird.Hybriding to produce new colours should only be undertaken by experienced breeders and resulting new colours should be bred back with big healthy 100% normals split for nothing like the birds in the picture below.
